Penny & the Quarters Singer Found
Back in March, we reported that Numero Group have released “You and Me” — an excellent recording unearthed at a 2006 estate sale that caught the ear of Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling who convinced director Derek Cianfrance to use it as the soundtrack to a pivotal scene in said film — on vinyl, following the tune’s subsequent buzz. The song’s writer, the late Jay Robinson, had just been discovered at that time, and now the vocalist in front of this timeless gem has surfaced: Nannie Sharpe, a 62-year-old choir singer — whose longtime nickname is “Penny” — was just identified by The Other Paper when her daughter heard about the story in a chance encounter with an Italian record collector. As it turns out, she hasn’t heard the rehearsal recording in over 40 years. It’s a fascinating little story, so go check it out, purchase a vinyl copy, and revisit “You and Me” below:
this is so awesome. hope she can collect her royalties!
